Xbox Durango Rumours Gain Momentum

durangoThe next generation of Xbox is almost upon us as rumours of the next Xbox, code-named Durango, are starting to gain momentum. If reports out of CES are to be believed, the next Xbox will feature some impressive specifications, including a Blu-ray drive. The full specifications, which appear to be quite realistic are as follows:

CPU:

  • x64 Architecture
  • 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)

GPU:

  • Direct3D 11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor
  • 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads

Storage and Memory:

  • 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)
  • 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)
  • HDD included
  • 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive

Networking:

  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct

These specifications should of course be taken with a huge pinch of salt, but the information appears to be inline with other rumours that have come out regarding the next generation system. If this information is accurate, it confirms that Microsoft will be licensing Blu-ray to allow it’s next generation console to play Blu-ray movies, and use more than a single layer on the Blu-ray disc. This is unlike the Wii U, which cannot play Blu-ray movies, or use more than one layer on the disc even though it is using the same technology.
