TRITTON Pro+ 5.1 Headset Review

The Pro+ 5.1 headset is the latest and greatest gaming headset from Tritton. The company claims that this is the only true Dolby Digital 5.1 headset on the market that can be used on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. This is of course true, but the headset also has support for PC and Mac users in Europe, as well as other devices if you know how to set it up correctly. What this means is that you have a fairly expensive headset, but because it works across many devices, its price can be justified.

How the true 5.1 surround sound works is that there are 4 speakers in each ear cup of varying sizes. The sound is automatically distributed across the speakers depending on the audio in your game. This allows for a more immersive and importantly, more realistic audio experience. Other headsets use different speaker configurations to provide a similar experience, but this 8-speaker configuration works very well, and means that the headset is well-balanced. The greatest thing about this headset is that, especially on PC, you can use it to watch your movies in 5.1 surround without needing a perfectly shaped box room.

The Tritton Pro+ is a thing of beauty in terms of design. It has a white gloss finish, with orange accents and LEDs, and a round shape. If you’ve ever owned a Tritton headset before, you’ll probably have realised that they are usually very angular. This still is the case in a sense, but the overall rounded shape of the headset does look a lot neater, and much more pleasing on the eye. There is one issue with this design, and it’s that the rounded shape means there is slightly more pressure on your ears when you wear it.

There are no replacement pads like you usually get with Tritton headsets, so no foam pads are in the pack. There’s also no stand with the decoder box, so you have to use it horizontally at all times. These are relatively minor issues overall though, and they don’t affect the usage of the device dramatically. Still, for what is quite an expensive headset, you’d expect a few more extras in the box. Tritton do however provide plenty of cables for connectivity to the various supported devices.
