Japan Launches 4.5-tonne Smartphone-Controlled Robot

The crazy folks in Japan have come one step close to realising a real Mobile Suit Gundam with the launch of Kuratas. The robot, which can be controlled via a smartphone over a 3G connection, or from inside a cockpit was launched today at the annual Wonder festival in Tokyo. The Wonder festival celebrates Japan’s obsession with anime, games and mecha/sci-fi characters.

Kuratas, developed by Suidobashi Heavy Industry, will be available in 16 colours, including pink, and has a top speed of around 7 mph. The robot can shoot 6,000 ball bearings a minute and can automatically lock on to a target.

The robot is named after it’s creator, Kogoro Kurata, and has been in development since 2010.
